Ascites is a bodily condition of pathologic fluid accumulation in the abdominal cavity. Ascites are mainly due to liver disease commonly caused by alcoholism, chronic viral hepatitis, and intravenous drug use. Tumors, obstruction in the portal vein, and diseases causing loss of protein, may also lead to ascites 
Symptomatic Signs
a) Accumulation of free fluid in the abdomen.
b) Rigidity and tenderness in the right or upper side of the abdomen.
c) Normally associated with a liver disease like cirrhosis.
Home Made Remedy
a) Prepare a decoction by boiling the roots of punarnava: Take approx 30 ml at least twice daily.
b) Gram: Take 25 gm gram. Boil it in one fourth litre water. Let the water reduce to half. Strain the liquid. You will have to drink this for at least 3 weeks.
c) Radish: It is very beneficial in the treatment of ascities. Mix the juice of the leaves of radish plant with water.
d) Pound the dried roots of punarnava to make a powder. Take approx. 1 tsp twice along with lukewarm water.
e) Bitter Gourd: It provides the needed relief from ascities. Extract 25 ml juice of bitter gourd. Drink it thrice after mixing with water. Juice of bitter gourd can be taken empty stomach also.
f) Garlic: It plays a pivotal role in curing ascities. Take 125 ml of water. Mix in half teaspoon garlic juice. Drink the garlic mixture regularly for days.
g) Take 120 mg of the powder of kutaki once or twice a day along with warm water.
h) Melon: Eat melon daily in a lavish portion to stay healthy and fight ascities. It also helps in digestion and restoring the fluid balance and homeostasis.
i) Prepare a powder by pounding together the 3 myrobalans (aamla, harad and baheda) in equal quantities and take 1 tsp along with a decoction of punarnava roots or the arka of punarnava.
j) Fluids: Carrot juice and buttermilk are benefiting in this disease. They have a vital role in restoring energy in the body, along with not adding to the accumulated fluid levels
k) Avoid drinking excess water: Milk can be given to the patient replacing water, when thirsty. In take of more water during the case of ascities adds to swelling and weight gain.
